I am a list maker for things I need to accomplish at work. Outside of the work environment, I hate lists. I blame my mother for this (sorry Mom). Growing up, my Mom would leave my brothers and I a weekly to-do list that contained chores or things we needed to do for the week. The lists usually reared their ugly heads during our summer breaks, but there was the occasional list during the school year. These to-do lists left by Mom would notoriously disappear. They would either be hidden under the calendar that my folks left out on the kitchen counter, accidently be torn out of the notebook and thrown away, or poof! just end up in a random kitchen cabinet or drawer. "Ahh Mom, I'm Sorry, I didn't know you wanted me to do all of the laundry, I didn't see the list. Or else I would have totally done it." My hatrid of lists set aside, last Sunday I created a list of things to do before baby arrives. Chad got real lucky and I even included some things he gets to do before baby arrives. I have this list under a watchful eye, so I know the antics that my brothers and I pulled on the lists we were given won't stand a chance on the list I have created.
This being our first kid, I was curious on what people listed as the things a person just had to do before their baby arrived just to make sure I didn't miss anything. I turned to my dear friend the world wide web and did a little research. There were all sorts of web sites out there with a ton of information and ideas. One of my favorites was a site that listed 73 things one MUST do before the birth of their child. It went through and mentioned things like:
-Buy the crib (check)
-Wash baby clothes (check)
-Wash the baby's bedding (check)
-Schedule times the family will visit (check),
-Clean house (sort of check, still in the works)
-Walk mindlessly through the aisles at Target (no Target here in Lewistown and Pamida kind of freaks me out, so I'll just skip this one)
The list went on and on. The last item listed was to stock up or catch up on sleep. Now, how in the heck can you do that when you are trying to take care of the other 72 items on that list? There are only 24 hours in a day last time I checked and 8-10 of those hours are already spent sleeping and another 8-10 hours are spent working. Soooo how should I go about getting that massage and facial you list as a necessity? Probably won't get to these items.
The good news is, I have finally started to take care of some things that I have been forgetting/putting off forever. The first one I am really embarrassed about. I finally got our thank you notes in the mail. The funny thing is, I have had the notes writen out for months and ready to be mailed, they were even in my car for a few weeks ready to be taken to the post office (since I don't drive anywhere, my car proved to be a really really bad place for them to be located). A weight has been lifted since they have gone into the mail (phew!).
Other things on the list included cleaning out the Jeep, running some random errands we have been putting off for about a month, purging our house of the cardboard boxes that have once again stacked up and we also managed to get in some fun local activities.
We also got our new roof last week(yay!)-this wasn't on my to-do list, since I really had no control over this one and since I know nothing about installing roofs but I was just really thankful this was out of the way before baby arrived. There is a serious roofer and painter shortage here in Lewistown and pretty much the whole town needs new roofs or new exterior paint from the hail storms that came through during the early part of the summer, a huge waiting game was involved to get our new roof. We had two guys work on roof and it took them 5 days to complete the roof. Those five days were pretty long days for me, since I work from home and we have 2 crazy dogs that freak out at anything-but it is finally done and I hope they did a good job (fingers crossed). It was kind of funny listening to our roofers during the day, one afternoon, our roofers got into a lover's quarrel with each other over who had the right to use a particular board. Voices were raised, feelings may have gotten hurt, one roofer stormed out the back gate and drove off. I never quite figured out who was in the wrong, but the roofer that stormed out came back with another board and a cheeseburger in hand that he gave as a peace offering to the other roofer. They were friends again and all was well in roofing land again.
Girl talk alert: I also finally got a haircut. I hate getting my haircut and I put it off for as long as humanly possible. My last haircut was in February and I started to get my long hippy hair again, so it definitely was time to go in for a haircut. This time I was feeling adventurous and actually wanted my hair chopped and to have layers. I haven't been this adventurous with my hair for years, but it was definitely time and I am super happy with the results. Plus, I think chopping my hair off helped me weigh in one pound less when I went to my doctor's appointment last week. Here is a pic of the new do and my pregnant self:
Ok, girl talk over. I will now only write about explosions and karate.
There are still some things on our list that we need to take care of, but we'll probably get them completed today or maybe, just maybe we can save some of these items for when our family comes up to visit. We just don't want anyone to get bored and seriously, we are looking out for you.
